What Is This Summer’s Top Collaboration With UNTUCKit?

The summer’s best collaboration has to be the UNTUCKit + David Hart collab. We partnered with one of our favorite independent menswear designers David Hart on a capsule collection that’s just for summer. All of it inspired by a trip Hart took to Montauk.

“There’s just an ease about Montauk,” he told us. “There's this rustic, nostalgic energy that's in that town and I think it really fits with the mood of UNTUCKit.”

Here, David describes the genesis of his first collaboration with UNTUCKit and reveals how he’s taken a shine to the more casual side of menswear.

 UNTUCKit:
Thanks for sitting down with us, David. With your own brand and in past collaborations, you’ve worked mostly with suits and tuxedos. What made you want to work with UNTUCKit?

David Hart:
I was just really intrigued by this young brand with so much steam behind it. I was curious about how it was growing. I’d seen the ads and heard people talking about UNTUCKit as the next big player in the menswear market. So of course, I would gravitate toward it and jump all over the idea of working with you to make clothes that guys need and want.

UNTUCKit:
How did you blend your personal style with UNTUCKit?

DH: 
My brand has a lot of tailoring and this buttoned-up, formal dressing. But UNTUCKit is what that guy is wearing when he's not dressed up for work or events. On the weekends, he’s in UNTUCKit. This is his everyday wardrobe, so this collab idea came from a place of natural synergy, I felt.

UNTUCKit:
Creating a collection inspired by Montauk was your idea. How did that come about? 

DH:
It came to me on a recent road trip I took. There’s just an ease about Montauk. It's super laid back. It's all the way out at the end of Long Island, so it takes a while to get out there. And once you're out there, you just want to relax and stay there and enjoy the beach, have good food. There's this rustic, nostalgic energy that's in that town and I think it really fits with the mood of UNTUCKit.

UNTUCKit:
What do you think will surprise people about this collection? 

DH:
I think lightweight knitwear for summer is a new idea to a lot of guys. We have a great summer weight merino sweater that sits well with the woven shirts, but it’s overly warm. Any guy could just pop right into their existing wardrobe. We also developed fun prints that I painted by hand. They're a little more novel and fun. They add that little element of kitsch that you’ll find in Montauk too with all the crab shacks and other beachy establishments.

UNTUCKit:
What was the most fun part about this collaboration?

DH:
Plugging into your team was so fun and seamless. I enjoyed making the prints and working with your in-house designers. Together, we developed the right colors and washes so everything felt cohesive and sat well with your core shirts. And it’s been thrilling to see my designs in your dynamic fit system, knowing every guy can wear it.

UNTUCKit:
What are guys going to love about this collection and adopting that Montauk vibe?

DH:
They’ll get the best of both worlds. New York fashion paired with the UNTUCKit sensibility of easy clothing that fits well and is super laid-back. Plus, the quality is there with your factories, with your fit. It's this nice marriage of the two and I can’t wait to see it out in the wild.

They're the secret weapon of our untucked assortment—and our best customers love them. Not just because they look sharp and feel comfortable just like our bestselling shirts (they do), but because we took the same approach to fit as we do with our button-downs. That is to say: we started from scratch and set out to fit as many guys as possible. 

Why did we start from the beginning? Because our customers love going untucked. So, we created pants designed to look great with our shirts. We started with a generous size range (30–40 inch waist), plus inseams for guys of all heights with 30-, 32-, and 34-inch inseams.

On top of that, we've introduced straight and slim fits in our Chino Pants and 5-Pocket Pants. Straight is the go-to fit for most guys, with just the right amount of room in the waist, seat, and thighs.

Chambray

A distant cousin of denim, chambray is a great choice of fabric for the warm summer months. It’s plain-weave cotton that’s lighter than denim, but has a very similar weave (and therefore feel). Fun fact: in the United States, day laborers used to wear chambray shirts with their jeans—leading to the term “blue collar.”

Wrinkle-Resistant Linen

Linen is definitely one of spring’s best fabrics, made from fibers of the flax plant. It’s super durable, water absorbent, and lightweight, making it easy and breezy for when the weather starts to heat up. 

“Linen is a great fabric for the spring and summer because it is a naturally wicking, breathable, and lightweight fabric,” says Theo Allegrini, Senior Designer at UNTUCKit. “The only problem is that it wrinkles easily.”

Indeed, that’s why we’ve put a wrinkle-resistant treatment in ours. “We combat this by coating it with a special finish that involves naturally occurring resins to create a stronger, more colorful, and wrinkle resistant fabric," says Allegrini.

Pique

Pique is a knit of cotton yarn, usually identified by its raised cords and fine ribbing. You’ve probably seen it in polos and plenty of other more formal styles. Fun fact: the name pique is derived from piquer—French for “quilt.” 

“Pique is a classic fabric that is both dressy and casual at the same time,” Allegrini says. “Pique stitch also adds a bit of structure to the fabric—while not adding any bulk, so it makes it great for looking smart and staying cool in the spring and summer.”

Cotton-TENCEL™

We're dedicated to reducing our impact on the planet. That's why we work exclusively work with factories that reduce water waste and follow string environmental guidelines. We’ve also started using biodegradable or compostable materials in all of our shipments and at our corporate office, as well as printing on sustainably sourced paper. That commitment continues with our Cotton TENCEL™ shirts. 

“TENCEL™ is the brand name for lyocell and modal fiber, a type of rayon,” says Allegrini. “These cellulose fibers are all made in a similar way: by dissolving wood pulp and using a special drying process called spinning. It’s unique because it is a sustainable manmade fiber.”

As it says in our stores, we started UNTUCKit because we couldn’t find shirts that looked good untucked. It’s a tough style to get right. That’s why we created the perfect untucked shirt. That was 10 years ago. In that time, we’ve helped millions of guys untuck. But it didn’t happen overnight.

Here’s the story of how two entrepreneurs with no fashion experience upended the industry by introducing a shirt everyone thought was so simple to make. But they didn’t know the whole story. Here’s how Shirts Designed to be Worn Untucked really started.

2010 | THE BIG PROBLEM

A little more than 10 years ago, UNTUCKit Founder Chris Riccobono, who’d had countless business ideas before UNTUCKit, identified the problem no brand had yet solved: no one makes shirts designed to be worn untucked. 

He started discovering his friends had the same problem—all of their nice dress and causal shirts were different lengths. 

“I visited every major store and actually brought a tape measure with me,” says Chris. “The length of men’s shirts was all over the place, but none of them were quite right.”

So Chris brought his idea to make untucked shirts to his friend and Columbia Business School classmate, Aaron Sanandres, who was working at Price Waterhouse Cooper at the time. They’d vetted plenty of new business ideas in the past, but none of them stuck. However this one piqued his interest. 

“It’s not often you find a true hole in the market and actually get ahead of the innovation,” says Aaron. “But I knew we had something from that initial phone call. I told him I was in.”

So Chris went up and down 7th Avenue in Manhattan, sample shirts in hand, trying to find a tailor who could create his vision. He eventually found one and after a year of development, he had seven storage units near his Hoboken, N.J., apartment chock full of the first run of shirts.

2011 | GOING ONLINE

With a business plan in hand, Chris and Aaron convinced a handful of family and friends to invest $150k into their fledgling idea with a funny name: UNTUCKit.

“The brand’s name is the smartest thing we’ve ever done,” says Chris. “It’s divisive, but more importantly disruptive and it got people talking.”

So Chris and Aaron would work their jobs during the day—then at night they’d pour their free hours into Project UNTUCKit. Eventually, untuckitofficial.us launched with 10 cotton shirts, selling a grand total of 150 units in the site’s first month—mostly to friends and family. 

“Those first few months were a labor of love,” says Aaron. “It was incredibly rewarding to know we were taking a risk and launching something new.”

2012 | THE EARLY DAYS 

For the first few years, shipping was fulfilled out of Chris’ third bedroom. He received, ironed, and processed all returns by hand. Along with Aaron, they answered all emails and phone calls—all of the early brand’s customer service needs. 

“I can remember those days being so stressful,” says Chris. “That’s why I always tell new business owners to stop and enjoy the moment—even in the stressful times.”

2013 | PUSHING FORWARD

After a few years of 18-hour days to keep the UNTUCKit dream alive, the UNTUCKit fulfillment operation found a new home in an official warehouse. And it was a good thing, because the operation had grown tremendously early on.

Meanwhile, UNTUCKit started marketing—mostly with radio spots and airline magazine ads. And the company picked up its first brand ambassador: two-time Stanley Cup champion Brad Richards of the New York Rangers. 

The new marketing tactics and ambassador all paid off big time. By the end of 2013, the brand officially sold out of untucked shirts. 

2014 | FULL TIME WORK

By now, the shirts had been redesigned to improve the design, and sales increase sixfold. UNTUCKit eventually passed a big landmark—selling its 1 millionth shirt. It was around that time that Chris decided to leave his job at GE and focus on UNTUCKit full time.

“At this point, I’d be living and breathing UNTUCKit for a while,” says Chris. “We’d heard such amazing customer response, so I was confident, but it was a risk for sure.”

The company had a few dozen employees, all working out of a WeWork in Soho—but with big plans for an actual UNTUCKit store on the horizon. 

2015 | BRICK AND MORTAR 

What had started as a meager ecomm-based business was about to dip into the world of retail. The first UNTUCKit store opened on Prince Street in New York City’s SoHo neighborhood. 

“It’s definitely one of my most proud moments,” says Chris. “We had great foot traffic and that location really put us on the map.”

The SoHo store started to grab some attention right away. Leonardo DiCaprio, fresh off the Oscar-winning release of The Revenant, loved the shirts so much that he’d been spotted at the store three times—in one week. 

This year also saw new product releases outside of button-downs, like tees, polos, and sweatshirts.  

2016 | UPWARD TRAJECTORY

Once the business built up enough steam, Aaron decided to leave his job as partner at PwC after 18 years at the company to join UNTUCKit full time to take the business to the next level. 

“This was the ultimate leap of faith for me,” says Aaron. “But by this time, I knew this business would take off. I was just excited to dedicate myself to it fully.” 

Then, an iconic moment: Founder Chris Riccobono shared his big problem in our Chris Walking commercial that told the brand story. It’s been widely shared on social media, with nearly 400,000 views on YouTube to date. 

“The commercial—just like the name—started a conversation.” says Chris. “Everyone was talking about it. And everyone had a different take.”

The brand launched new products in jackets, sweatshirts, and even a Tall fit. Also, new brick-and-mortar stores opened in Austin, Chicago, LA, and San Francisco.

2017 | A WHOLE NEW HQ

UNTUCKit HQ officially opened in SoHo, down the street from the store. At this point, the corporate office had nearly 100 employees. The team embarked on its first international photoshoot in Cartagena, Colombia. 

At the Super Bowl, Chris met Drew Brees and told him about UNTUCKit. Later on, Drew did some research and returned to Chris with pages of questions about the business. Drew was impressed enough to sign on as an investor—and brand ambassador.

“To have such an icon representing the brand was a huge milestone,” says Chris. “And he was so engaged in the business side of things. It’s been a great partnership.”

In 2017, the iconic Wrinkle-Free™ and Performance™ lines launched—the brand’s biggest franchises so far. With a special treatment, they came out of the dryer ready to wear, making our untucked shirts even easier to wear and care for. The brand also expanded into shorts and a women’s line, featuring shirtdresses and shirts.

2018 | THE IDEA SPREADS

UNTUCKit began its collaboration with MLB in this year by launching MLB Signature Series shirts—Wrinkle-Free™ shirts featuring top team logos.

“Sports has always been an important part of UNTUCKit,” says Chris. “Athletes get the concept more than anyone and I think that’s why we’ve attracted so many.”

Hockey icon Wayne Gretzky became another athlete investor and ambassador around this time, which was also when our first Canadian store launched in Toronto.

"I'm excited to be working with UNTUCKit—especially as they open so close to home,” Gretzky said at the time. “Their incredible product drew me to the brand, and, after learning about their rapid growth, I knew I wanted to be involved.”

Around this time, the brand also solidified its spot in pop culture, appearing as an answer on Jeopardy: “This clothing company’s shirttails fall between the belt and the bottom of the zipper, so no need to stuff them in.” 

2019 | ACROSS THE POND

In keeping close ties to the sports world, UNTUCKit’s billboard appeared in Yankee Stadium’s right field. The brand signed Manchester City’s Kevin DeBruyne as a brand ambassador. He’s one of the biggest soccer stars in the world, and joined UNTUCKit as it opened two stores in London, expanding its international footprint.

Back home, the brand’s “The Right Call” ad (featuring Drew Brees) aired, showing the difference wearing the perfect-fitting shirt can actually make. 

Men’s Health also declared that UNTUCKit makes “the sharpest flannel shirt you’ll ever own.” 

It’s around this time that many major men’s brands change their strategy to lead with untucked shirts. Chris and Aaron weren’t shocked by the copycats, but saw this as proof that untucked shirts had grown beyond a fad—they were in our closets for good.

2020 | ...QUARANTINE

The COVID-19 pandemic turned the world on its head, and everyone is forced inside. People who could work from home do so, and everyone traded their untucked button-downs for tees and Henleys. To respond to the times, UNTUCKit adjusted its collection to make it even more comfortable and gave away 45,000 shirts to first responders.

“It was by far the hardest year for the business,” says Chris. “But we safely opened up every one of our stores as soon as we could and we’re already seeing customers returning for shirts to help them get back out there.”

UNTUCKit also deployed new technology to further the business by adopting contactless delivery, creating a live chat tool, and launching an automatic Fit Finder. 

2021 | 10 YEARS IN THE MAKING

This year, UNTUCKit is proud to sell its 7 millionth shirt. And to become the official shirt of guys looking sharp and feeling comfortable post-quarantine. 

“It’s been an incredible journey and we’re so grateful to our customers,” says Aaron. “As the untucked shirt becomes a part of everyday life, we look forward to helping millions more guys look great and feel comfortable with the perfect-fitting shirt.”

The stores mark the 80th and 81st UNTUCKit locations, with five in Canada and the rest across 34 states in the U.S. 

"This is a huge moment for UNTUCKit. Having a presence in the U.K. has always been top of mind for us,” said UNTUCKit Founder Chris Riccobono. “We’re looking forward to giving them an authentic way to experience UNTUCKit—up close and in person.”

UNTUCKit’s U.K. locations will carry a curated selection of UNTUCKit’s men's apparel—from timeless wrinkle-free and performance option to seasonal flannels, sweaters, and outerwear. Additionally, the stores will have on-site activations like whiskey tastings, just as in many U.S. stores.  

Customers who can’t make it to the new locations can still enjoy the same benefits as customers in the states with the launch of the official UNTUCKit U.K. site, launched today. Now UK customers can enjoy fast, free shipping and returns on every order. 

Though the launch is just happening, UNTUCKit already has a fan in the U.K: Premier League soccer champion and Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.

“I’m so excited to be working with UNTUCKit as they launch in the U.K. I’m not a guy that often tucks in, so it’s great having an untucked shirt that looks good and fits great,” says De Bruyne. His favorite part? “For me, it’s the fit. The shirts are never too baggy or too short, and they never bunch up in the arms.”

UNTUCKit shirts are Kevin’s go-to when he’s off the field. But overall it’s made me a much more patient person. That’s a must as a parent. I always try to be as calm as possible, no matter what the situation. Fatherhood has also given me a greater sense of urgency with everything in life. I don’t want to miss an opportunity to spend more time and to create life experiences with them.”

Everything I do now in life reflects on my son DJ. I never want him to grow up and have to deal with a dark cloud in the future because of a bad decision I made. Day to day, DJ is at that stage where he imitates and follows what we do. So I have to be careful about how I carry myself. Even with my diet, I eat healthier because DJ wants to eat the same foods as I do. Every choice I make are ultimately motivated by the goal of making a better life for DJ and our baby girl. They are constant reminders.”

"You don’t have to be a biological father to influence someone’s life. My Uncle Fred, whom I call dad, has been an inspiration to me since I was 14 years old and homeless. He and my aunt took in me and my sisters as kinship foster parents. He cared for us and showed us what it was to be a powerfully loving, compassionate man. He gave us the love that we were lacking, and he taught me how to trust people again.

When people come from the foster care system they can feel like they don’t belong. But we’re not any different from anybody else, and there’s nothing wrong us. As a society, we need to be as open and compassionate with each other as possible. We should help others by embracing them with understanding, just like my uncle did for me.

I’d like to help kids who have stories like mine, so I’m working with Project Independence, a government organization that helps foster kids with everything from small scholarships to classes on how to become independent, successful humans once they leave the system.

I believe that sharing my experience is how true growth and healing can happen. I want to show anyone who has a background like mine that they, too, can do anything."

"My father and I are such different people. My dad emigrated here from Seoul, South Korea. He didn’t speak any English and ended up working at a dry cleaner pressing shirts and pants—in St. Louis, Mo. of all places! He showed his care and affection by suffering through really hard, grueling work for his family. My dad demonstrated the importance of consistency and a strong moral compass. If he said he was going to do something, he always did it. I’ll pass that same lesson down to my kids. My dad showed me there are different ways to show that you care.

At UNTUCKit, we’re obsessed with fit—which involves not only selecting the proper shirt but wearing your shirt properly as well.
